Have you ever dreamed of living in a loft downtown somewhere? Can you imagine yourself living in a space where the new mingles with the old? Where history and convenience live side by side? In Tuscaloosa, the chance to call a downtown loft home are few and far in between. But loft fans rejoice! The historic Kress Building right in the heart of downtown Tuscaloosa is now home to 6 lofts, and the Alice Maxwell Team wants to help make your loft living dreams come true!
The Kress building at 2223 University Blvd. in Tuscaloosa was built in 1937 and closed in 1987. It was part of S.H. Kress & Co. 5, 10, and 25 cent store. At some point, it was refurbished and the exterior appearance changed a bit. Many of us know it as the now home to the Pants Store and Rock-N-Roll Sushi, but it was once home to a bustling store and lunch counter. Pictured above is the current view of the Kress Building and what it looked like at its beginning.
The old flooring has been refinished, while the 12-14′ tall ceilings allow for the exposed pipes and ductwork to play off of the old charm of the original building. Each loft features an open floor plan, and luxurious finishes throughout!
Loft living at Kress is perfect for anyone who loves the energy of downtown, and wants to walk to the many restaurants, night life, stadium, class, and the many retail stores around the downtown/campus area. The Kress lofts also feature stainless steel counter tops, and stainless steel appliances. There’s no need to worry about parking, as the public parking deck is just a half-block away!
